The construction of the Cavalli Barracks dates back to 1856 and it was used by the Army until the mid-20th century. The complex was built by the Ministry of Defense mostly at the end of the 19th century, following a rectangular plan with four main buildings and other smaller buildings arranged peripherally on all four sides, forming a continuous perimeter enclosure along with a surrounding wall.

In the center of the area is the parade ground, around which six other main buildings and two canopies are distributed. The paving of the open area is primarily made of concrete or bituminous conglomerate, except for the westernmost portion, which is finished with Mergozzo stone slabs.
